Thomas Ferrell, 77, Passed Away on February 25, 2019
Thomas Ferrell had an impeccable work ethic and always put family first. He enjoyed traveling the globe and exploring various cultures around the globe.
John was an enthusiastic supporter of the University, serving on its Board of Visitors and as Rector. Additionally, he chaired its state GO Virginia board.
Early Life and Education
Thomas Dean Ferrell, 77, from Sturgis passed away peacefully at Canyon Creek Memory Care due to complications caused by Alzheimer’s disease on February 25, 2019. An alumnus of the University of Virginia where he served on its Board of Visitors and was even appointed Rector in later years, Mr. Ferrell held multiple leadership roles on its campus before passing.
He worked on bridge and iron projects with Chicago Bridge and Iron, was an extremely hard-working individual, loved his family immensely and took great pleasure from spending time together. An avid golfer himself, he also enjoyed fishing, swimming and traveling extensively.
He graduated from Waycross High School as both an outstanding football player and academic. Following that he attended Hampden-Sydney College as the valedictorian before attending Medical College of Georgia with his wife as his partner. Both parents were deeply dedicated to raising their two children together.
Tom Ferrell has extensive litigation experience, particularly in insurance defense. He represents railroads, trucking companies, retailers, clubs and restaurants as well as healthcare providers and nursing homes; in addition defending claims related to property damage, personal injury and wrongful death.
He has handled multiple jury trials and appeals and holds licenses in Pennsylvania as well as before federal courts of DC, Third and Fourth Circuits.
Tom Ferrell is the founding and President of E.T. Ferrell & Son, established in 1935. An active member of his local community and part of Mount Olive Jaycees. Additionally, he holds memberships as a Mason and Sudan Shriner; three sons under his tutelage include two who have achieved Eagle Scout status.
Achievement and Honors
Thomas Ferrell left this life peacefully surrounded by family and friends. He leaves behind his mother Mary Lee Garrett Scott of Mt Airy, Georgia; Aunts Mildred Hinerman & Melody Hinerman both from Orrville Ohio; Uncles James & Hillard Garrett both living in Clarkesville GA as well as numerous cousins & relatives.
He appeared as a cast member on NBC sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live from 1995 to 2002 and went on to star in several comedy movies after co-founding Funny or Die website with Adam McKay in 2007.
With 24 years of advancement experience and having worked at universities including Penn, Michigan State, Harvard and Dartmouth he brought extensive major gift fundraising experience. Additionally, he served on Penn’s senior management team during its recent $4.3 billion Making History Campaign.
Thomas Ferrell was an ardent family man who understood the value of hard work and community involvement. A member of White Springs AME Church for many years, Thomas taught his children respect and good manners as well as spending time at his cabin and traveling.
Pat Lampkin, former vice president and chief student affairs officer at UVA, noted his love for UVA football games; often taking his grandchildren along. They enjoyed being together. She noted their strong bonds between family members.
He is survived by his wife, Janis; sons Thomas Ferrell III and Scott Franklin; daughter Sarah Ferrell Jordan; brother Will Ferrell; sister-in-law Wanda Griffith; seven grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Thomas Ferrell has become one of the most acclaimed celebrities in America due to his substantial net worth and has amassed it through various ventures and business opportunities.
He has much to show for his hard work and dedication; one reason being his extraordinary success in television.
As well as his acting career, he has also contributed to various charitable and social causes. He strongly believes in giving back to society, and has done an exceptional job giving back. For this, he was honored with several awards and recognition – surely an inspiration to us all!
