Early Life and Education
Tom was born and raised in Shawnee, Kansas. During the early 1950s at St. Joseph High School he served as vice president of his class before going on to earn both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s from University of Mississippi respectively.
Tom worked as an over-the-road truck driver for Dilliard’s while simultaneously maintaining a large farm where he and Nancy raised horses, sheep, goats, cows, pigs, chickens, exotic birds, fish, and dogs.
He taught himself how to operate heavy construction equipment as well as mechanic, carpentry, gardening and farming tasks. In addition, he was an amazing husband, father, grandfather and friend to all. He would go out of his way to help strangers without expecting anything in return!
Achievement and Honors
Thomas Earnshaw was an outstanding and revered figure in his field, widely recognized for revolutionizing marine chronographs and essential in helping Charles Darwin make his voyages. For this work he earned awards from the Board of Longitude.
He is also an esteemed academic, having completed his doctorate degree at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies in Particle Physics on rare decays of B mesons under Professor Peter Gallagher’s supervision.
His publications can be found in peer-reviewed journals, and he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2011. Additionally, in 2010 he received the coveted Wolf Prize in Physics awarded by Israel Academy of Sciences as recognition of outstanding scientific achievement by a young scientist.
Tom earned a high school diploma, going on to operate heavy equipment, drive semi trucks, carpentry work, roofing work, plumbing jobs and farming among other projects. Additionally he was an devoted husband, dad, grandpa and friend to many.
Tom and Nancy raised six children – Victoria, Jeff, Kim, Tammy, Cindy and Andrea. They lived in Shawnee Kansas where Tom thrived cultivating beautiful vegetable and flower gardens.
Tom and Nancy eventually “retired” to a farm in Pomona, Kansas where they kept horses, sheep, goats, cows, pigs, exotic birds and many other animals as well as beautiful gardens to care for. Additionally, Tom returned to work as an over-the-road truck driver at Max Rieke Brothers Construction in Shawnee and enjoyed having family visit his farm to see all the animals! His children and grandchildren loved coming visit!
