While attending Lincoln University’s historically black college in 1944 – an historically black college known for its student body that included E Franklin Frazier, Charles S Johnson, Oliver Cox and W E B Du Bois – as a sociological professor he met Black sociologists that advocated racial justice worldwide and domestically: E Franklin Frazier, Charles S Johnson Oliver Cox as well as pan-African socialist W E B Du Bois.
He graduated with both a BSCE and M.SCE from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. Additionally, he was recognized with American Water Works Association Utility Man of the Year honors while employed at Kelley Gidley Blair & Wolfe where he prepared water and wastewater facilities plans and specifications, participated in municipal financing of projects for water/wastewater infrastructure facilities projects, and prepared utility management plans and specifications.
He played for Joe Paterno’s Penn State Nittany Lions from 1985-1989 and amassed 1,341 yards rushing on 261 attempts – including an extraordinary 186-yard performance against BYU during the 1989 Holiday Bowl!
Personal Life
He was an avid reader and self-described socialite, participating in many community theater productions as a member of a variety of big band jazz and 1960s rock ‘n’ roll cover bands – as well as belonging to Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
He worked at various newspapers, writing columns for the San Diego Union that often covered local politics. Over time he became frustrated covering an often contentious county board of supervisors meeting and disinterested with covering zoning issues.
Blair leaves behind his wife Wendy and three children. He remains active within the community by volunteering his time for youth football programs and attending events organized by Penn State Alumni Association.
