Steve Wyckoff, a Greenville High School Alumnus, Dies at Arlington National Cemetery
Every year, the Greenville High School Education Foundation recognizes two GHS alumni for their achievements and service to their community. This year’s recipients were Rob Stafford (2021 Outstanding GHS Alumnus) and Steve Wyckoff (2020 Outstanding Alumnus).
Wyckoff became the first in his family to earn a college degree, according to his aunt. Initially enlisting with the Army with goals to become either a warrant officer or attend flight school.
Early Life and Education
The Wyckoff Family YMCA Early Childhood Curriculum cultivates all areas of child development, from social to emotional learning that foster relationships between adults and other children.
As part of his professional duties, he serves on the board of Montcalm County Conservation District and Michigan United Conservation Clubs, volunteering his services for both. Furthermore, he sits on Ducks Unlimited’s State Policy Committee as well as being appointed as an Advisor on their Partners in Conservation Advisory Committee by Michigan DNR.
Rick is married to Linda and they share three daughters – Anna Eisenberg, Dana Haveson and Michelle Mitchell – all who reside in Greenville. Through his leadership with Ducks Unlimited, Greenville Public Schools board membership and Montcalm County Conservation District he has played a crucial role in safeguarding regional natural resources.
Professional Career
His career spans over 10 years in the industry. During that time he has developed software applications for companies such as Verizon Media and Millennial Media while also implementing Continuous Integration systems and DevOps tools in Python.
His work has enabled the company to save money and increase efficiency, winning numerous awards including 2010 Deal of the Year honors. Furthermore, he is actively involved with local real estate groups.
As a member of the Grand Traverse Yacht Club and having explored parts of the Caribbean as well as Washington’s San Juan Islands by sailing, he takes pleasure in sailing in his free time as well as working out. An avid hunter and fisherman.
Achievement and Honors
Steve Wyckoff has garnered many honors throughout his career. Additionally, he has provided service to local community groups like Greenville Public School Board, Montcalm County Conservation District and Citizens Waterfowl Advisory Committee.
His work has yielded discoveries that are revolutionizing how Type 1 diabetes is diagnosed and treated. His team has discovered sources that explain nearly all genetic risk for this condition and has also contributed to national and international genetics consortia.
Pat Aldige, Chief Administrative Officer for Fred Hutch Research Center and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, honored Wyckoff with the 23rd Wyckoff Award on Aug 18 at a barbecue hosted by both organizations. This recognition acknowledges those whose consistent service and teamwork contribute to its success.
Personal Life
Over 80 mourners attended Stephen Wyckoff’s burial ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery yesterday morning under cloudy, unseasonably cool skies. His widow Erika stood with her parents and stepchildren holding folded American flags as they offered their respects. Stephen Wyckoff’s two stepchildren also paid their respects.
Wyckoff was killed June 6 in Helmand Province of Afghanistan while trying to rescue another injured soldier. He belonged to Fort Bragg’s 1st Battalion 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment 4th Brigade Combat Team as a member.
His family remembers him with fondness. A video sent home from Afghanistan showed him using desert flowers to form the letters for “I Love You”, sending it directly to his wife and stepson in love messages from Afghanistan. Additionally, it included footage showing members of his unit.
