Steve Sexton – A Poet, Racetrack Executive, and Poet
Steve Sexton is an esteemed horse racing executive, having worked at various racetracks to further hone his management and industry knowledge. A customer service minded manager, Corey Johnsen enlisted Steve as part of Lone Star Park’s preparation team prior to its grand opening.
He also works as a composer, conductor, arranger and keyboardist; working closely with Canadian singer Anne Murray’s ensemble Exchange.
Early Life and Education
Steven Sexton was raised in Springfield, Ohio. He attended Greenon High School before enrolling at Wittenberg University to earn a bachelor’s degree in education. It was during this undergraduate program when Steven discovered Native American literature and knew it would become his passion in life.
He can be heard playing keyboard on 2WO, Platinum Blonde and Shirley Eikhard’s albums as a keyboardist, while being one half of Exchange – an ensemble which has produced seven albums that reached Number 9 on Billboard New Age charts since 1992.
He has undertaken research across an extensive spectrum of issues – spanning air pollution control policy to household electricity consumption and biofuel adoption – which have been published in leading academic journals. As such, his studies have contributed greatly to an enhanced understanding of both economics and social impacts associated with energy and agricultural policies.
Steve Sexton has an extensive history in horse racing. Beginning his career as a sales promotion manager and transitioning through various tracks to gain experience and build his management portfolio; including Santa Anita, Canterbury Downs, Golden Gate Fields Thistledown and Lone Star Park before landing Churchill Downs where he has served as president since 2002.
He has focused on the application of microeconomic theory and econometric methods to analyze firm and consumer behavior, evaluate policy impacts on markets outcomes, identify cause-and-effect relationships and establish cause/effect chains. His research has been published in both academic journals as well as books.
He is also a composer and musician, having contributed as keyboardist on albums by Strange Advance, 2WO, Platinum Blonde, Shirley Eikhard and Exchange – while acting as Musical Director for Canadian singer Anne Murray.
Achievement and Honors
Stephen Sexton won the Rooney Prize for his debut collection of poetry If All the World and Love Were Young. According to Sexton, his inspiration behind writing it came from Super Mario World; using it as an outlet to process grief following his mother’s passing away.
He is also an accomplished composer, conductor, arranger and keyboardist; having worked alongside artists like Celine Dion, Bryan Adams and Michael Buble as musical directors for their performances. For 25 years he served as Canadian singer Anne Murray’s musical director.
He is an author of several books and academic journal articles, currently working at Duke University as an assistant professor of economics and public policy, while mentoring over 12 undergraduate, master’s, and Ph.D. students.
He is an active member of Sigma Chi fraternity and previously served as chapter president. Additionally, he taught high school for two years prior to becoming part of Global Impact STEM Academy’s Board of Directors; additionally he enjoys working on cars and motorcycles for recreation.
He has published extensively in both academic and general reader publications in the fields of energy and public policy. Furthermore, he has served as mentor to numerous undergraduate, master’s, and Ph.D. students, taking their feedback about his own research very seriously.
Ben has extensive pro bono legal experience and has represented refugees seeking asylum in the U.S. as well as indigent individuals in civil litigation matters. Furthermore, he serves as faculty leader for Duke University Energy Initiative Doctoral Student Fellows program.
Steven Sexton is a Senior Lecturer of Initial Teacher Education at the University of Otago and has published numerous journal articles, book chapters and general audience publications related to teacher cognition, heteronormativity and science education research. Additionally, Steven teaches both Postgraduate and Undergraduate programs at Otago.
Dey has been an essential member of Ireland’s rugby team over the last decade and will aim to secure Grand Slam and World Cup journeys before his retirement. His contract with IRFU is worth approximately EUR650,000 per season and his home address in Louisville, Kentucky was listed with SEC as 700 Central Ave LOUISVILLE KY 40208
