He earned a bachelor’s degree in construction and engineering from Wake Technical Community College before continuing on to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte for further study.

After college, David became a professor of chemistry and oceanography at Foothill College in Los Altos, California. He enjoyed providing his students with field experiences. In the 1970s, he founded one of the first eco-tourism companies: Nature Expeditions International (NEI).
