Bridging the high-low divide
During the last five years, Marc Jacobs has struggled with declining revenues. In 2017, he lost more than $50 million. He has also had to restructure his business with LVMH, which owns his label. In a restructuring deal, LVMH took control of the company.
But a shift in the brand’s direction has caused consumer confusion. Many consumers believe that the brand is devalued. Its products no longer resemble luxury items. Instead, the label is more similar to contemporary labels like Kate Spade and Coach.
The brand has also lost its creative director, Sebastian Suhl. Suhl was previously the head of Kenzo, but he was replaced last year by Eric Marechalle. Suhl unified the brand’s contemporary and ready-to-wear lines. He was fired after only three months.
In February, Marc Jacobs hired John Targon, who was previously the co-founder of Baja East. Targon worked on the brand’s runway looks, but was fired after three months. In early 2018, Targon was replaced by Eric Marechalle, a former head of Kenzo.
