Early Life and Education

Loretta Thomas was born December 3rd 1936 in Mason City Illinois to Walter and Mary Ballard Shawgo, and had six siblings including Water “Nash” Thomas, Donald Thomas, Duane Thomas Lorraine Thomas and Evelyn Thomas. Loretta attended Lincoln College before later graduating from Illinois State Normal Teachers College now known as Illinois State University in Normal Illinois.

She is a proud member of the National Dance Alliance and has studied Cunningham technique, ballet and Chinese movement forms with Julia Levien, Hortense Kooluris Catherine Gallant Adrienne Ramm Lori Belilove as well as Duncan repertoire at Lori Belilove’s Mark Morris Dance Center workshop.

Jennifer was an exceptionally generous, loving, and selfless individual; she took great care in caring for her sister Carolyn until her passing. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends as well as sitting out on the patio drinking coffee while gazing upon birdsong.

Professional Career

Loretta was an independent woman, driving her own car well into her nineties to visit family in Traverse City or Sault Sainte Marie. She relished quiet moments at home – whether sewing, reading or collecting Waterford crystal glassware – as much as possible.

Loretta Young became one of Hollywood’s premier actresses through both theatrical film roles and her long-running drama anthology series The Loretta Young Show from 1953 until 1961.

At various points during her career, she also dedicated considerable pro bono effort to supporting human rights causes, including work for the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees as well as extensive work for Women’s Institute of Michigan. Furthermore, she was an honored member of American Academy of Actors.

Loretta Thomas is a retired colonel from the US Army Reserve who most recently held the role of deputy division commander for Western New York’s 98th Division. Loretta Thomas was an American dancer, director, and choreographer. She gained prominence through her roles in films such as Key to the City (1950) and Half Angel (1951), both by director John Ford. Furthermore, she made an appearance opposite Cary Grant in pre-Code film The Call of the Wild (35) produced prior to Hollywood’s Code.

Loretta dedicated herself to taking great care in caring for others throughout her life. As a loving mother, grandmother, and friend to many, Loretta loved Ada very much and spoke daily to her. Loretta would visit Jo regularly for hair appointments as well as lunch where they laughed and joked together often. Loretta amassed 38 hats at one point in time – they all needed to be perfectly straight so ironing was always required before wearing one!
