Personal Life

Gamow was born in Ivanovskoe, Russia, and raised by a family that was very involved in the arts. He received his primary education in the Yalta and Moscow schools, then studied art formally under private teachers from 1907 to 1911.

After graduation, he worked on theoretical physics. He made important contributions to the fields of atomic and nuclear physics and stellar physics.

He was also an author of popular science books that introduced the public to concepts such as relativity and atomic physics. His work inspired a generation of young scientists. He died of liver failure in 1968 at age 64. He was buried in Colorado. He was an acclaimed scientist and a major contributor to Russian physics. Several of his books were adapted into films.
