Early Life and Education
William Lockrey was born in 1918 and died at 66 in 1984, being laid to rest at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Middlesex County, Pennsylvania.
Thomas Joseph Lockrey married Emma L Capel on March 29, 1899 at their marriage location and they had one child: Thomas Joseph Lockrey.
Later he relocated to Pennsylvania, working as a designer for a major corporation there and overseeing multiple projects such as designing an automobile prototype.
He served as chairman of a local community organization, was involved with church and civic activities, was a member of both the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and American Civil Liberties Union as well as Philadelphia Rotary Club – an avid believer in education as a means to equality for all.
Professional Career
Professor of Design at the University of Pennsylvania since 1996, where he has published numerous books on design theory and practice. Additionally, his research projects focus on social innovation, holistic care and cross-cultural investigations. His current research involves applying new product development methods to encourage social behavioural change. He is an active member of the Reduce Food Waste Cooperative Research Centre, serves on several editorial boards of academic journals and frequently appears as guest lecturer at universities and conferences worldwide. Claire Lockrey, Dorothy Toner, Brian W Lockrey, Gary Toner James Toner Brendon Toner Brigid Toner are some of his close relatives and associates whom he counts among them.
He will be dearly missed.
Achievement and Honors
Lockrey and his team received the Good Design Award for a groundbreaking circular economy design approach to Australia, spearheaded by RMIT researchers working alongside Arcadis and One Planet Consulting to demonstrate how design can foster change across production processes, materials, products, business models and industries – and help Australia meet its international obligations of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent by 2030.
He has an extended network of friends and family to turn to when times get difficult, as well as an active following on social media who leave well wishes and condolences to show their support. They also assist him with promoting his work and events.
