Liam Alvarez Vs Saul Alvarez
Liam Alvarez, one of Solinco’s premier junior athletes, has participated in tournaments all across the United States and beyond his home state of Southern California.
At the 80,000-seat AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Alvarez will face England’s Liam Smith. Many pundits anticipate an overwhelming victory for Alvarez.
Early Life and Education
Saul “Canelo” Alvarez seems to have it all: fast horses, flashy cars and the love and admiration of an entire nation dedicated to boxing. His fists have propelled him to the pinnacle of boxing; but on Saturday night, Liverpool-born Liam Smith will show him just who’s boss in terms of making him pay.
Chepo remembered seeing an underweight, red-haired teenager enter his gym for the first time; at 135 pounds he looked vulnerable and small in comparison. Chepo offered guidance as best he could while working with this teenager and offered help when necessary.
Canelo’s first fight was an undercard bout against Carlos Baldomir at Los Angeles’ Staples Center and, despite contractually being required to weigh-in at 152 lbs, Canelo knocked him out within six rounds, pocketing himself a $5 Million payday in return. Thus marking an auspicious start for Canelo.
Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has won multiple world championships across four weight classes, holding both unified titles in three of those divisions and lineal championships in two.
Alvarez proved relentless in his pursuit of Smith during their fight, dropping him three times and closing in to finish him off with a powerful finisher punch. Alvarez’s knockout win marked Smith’s first professional loss after an unbeaten streak of 23 fights.
Alvarez entered into a five-year, 11-fight deal worth at least $365 million with sports streaming service DAZN in October 2018 which set a world record at the time. At that time, this contract outpaced Floyd Mayweather Jr’s eight-year $200 million deal with Showtime and established himself as one of the highest earners in sports history. Since then he has successfully defended his title against Amir Khan and Magomed Kurbanov.
Achievement and Honors
This weekend’s massive betting favorite has come a long way since losing to Floyd Mayweather back in 2013.
Liverpool’s Chris Eubank has quickly established himself as one of the premier prizefighters. When they meet again at AO Arena on 17 June, he can realize his dream.
Alvarez united the WBA and WBO light middleweight titles by defeating Lovemore N’dou with a ninth-round stoppage, then followed it up with third-round technical knockout wins over James Kirkland and Amir Khan at 168 pounds – both against Puerto Rican four-division champion Miguel Cotto with an unanimous decision win in December to become WBC middleweight king.
Liam is a former USTA Southern California Junior Champion and one of the premier talents on the junior circuit. Additionally, he currently studies postgraduate musicology with Robert Dean and Adrian Thompson at GSMD and has performed as a soloist on viola da gamba at venues including Wigmore Hall and Barbican Centre.
On 17 September 2021, Alvarez successfully defended his WBO title against Carlos Baldomir in a bout that was contracted for 151 lb, yet Alvarez prevailed via sixth round TKO victory at Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.
On 2 November 2019 Alvarez moved up two weight classes in order to challenge WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev for his title. Following a competitive first ten rounds, Alvarez scored an uppercut combination that dropped Plant, prompting the referee to stop proceedings and stop Alvarez’s fight.
