Layo George

Layo George

A nurse by training, Layo George is on a mission to improve maternal health outcomes for women of color. Her company Wolomi is a community and platform that supports mothers throughout their pregnancy journey.

During her years as a labor and delivery nurse, she witnessed the stark disparity in healthcare outcomes between mothers of color and their white counterparts. That’s when she knew she needed to do something about it.

Early Life and Education

Layo George was born and raised on a plantation in the Rappahannock River near Fredericksburg, Virginia. Her mother ran the property, where she provided George and his siblings with a traditional education, mainly through homeschooling.

After completing her undergraduate degree in nursing, George pursued her Master’s of Science in health/health care administration/management at Georgetown University. She quit her job to pursue this passion, going on a sabbatical while she finished her degree.

She noticed the systemic issue of disparity in healthcare experiences between Black mothers and white mothers. She wanted to change this by making pregnancy a communal experience for Black and brown women in America. She created Wolomi, which means “hands in water” in Yoruba, to do just that.

Professional Career

Currently, layo is a senior nursing executive at Unity Healthcare, an FQHC based in the capital city of Washington, D.C. She has been in the industry for some time and is a well rounded practitioner with extensive experience in clinical research, quality improvement and population health initiatives. As far as the best of the best is concerned, she’s a true believer in the golden rule. She takes her responsibilities seriously and makes it happen for the good of the good guys aka the patients and their families. A true fan of the arts and a sucker for a good story, she’s always on the lookout for the next big thing in the healthcare space.

Personal Life

Layo George is an entrepreneur who focuses on maternal health. She is the CEO of Wolomi, a company that develops a companion app for women to improve their experiences and outcomes during their perinatal period. She has also been a nurse and healthcare administrator. She has a passion for the welfare of pregnant women, and she is known for her work in maternal health, equity and social determinants of health.

George exhibits a number of negative character traits, including dishonesty, insecurity and anxiety. He is frequently found fabricating elaborate deceptions at work or in his relationships to maintain some slight advantage or (pretend) image of success. His professional life is unstable and he is frequently fired after making an embarrassing blunder. He is able to secure short-term jobs for a few episodes, but most of his careers last less than a year.
