John Stannard was an English painter born in Bedford who specialized in watercolours depicting rustic scenes.

His watercolor paintings of picturesque cottages and mills were widely admired. He was a member of both the Royal Academy and Royal Society of British Artists.

Early Life and Education

Stannard was born in Flitwick, Bedfordshire to Henry John Sylvester Stannard (1870-1951) and Theresa (1860). A painter by profession, he specialized in watercolour paintings.

He painted landscapes and genre scenes of British country life. His artwork earned him the admiration of the British Royal Family.

He was a member of the Royal Drawing Society and often displayed his works at various exhibitions. These included Abbey Gallery, Dudley Gallery Art Society, Walker Art Gallery, London Salon, Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, New Gallery, and Royal Cambrian Academy of Art.

Professional Career

Stannard was a Senior Lecturer in the School of Law at Queen’s University Belfast and taught an array of topics such as Criminal Law, Contract, Tort and Sentencing.

He was awarded an OBE in the New Year Honours list for his services to legal education. Additionally, he wrote and presented several BBC programs exploring the interconnection between science and religion.

He was raised on a farm in rural upstate New York, where he birthed calves, slaughtered goats, milked cows and worked tractors. Additionally, he studied physics at Syracuse University, earning both his B.S. and PhD. Later he joined the Naval Research Lab to research solar energy for satellites.

Achievements and Honors

John Stannard has made significant contributions to his field and been recognized with numerous honors throughout his career. He received an OBE in the New Year Honours List as well as an honorary doctorate from Queen’s University.

Stannard earned his stripes as a coach at Michigan State, helping recruit four top-40 nationally ranked recruiting classes and leading them to multiple national quarterfinals in six seasons. Additionally, he coached several players who achieved individual recognition such as Jay Chapman who was a semifinalist for both the MAC Hermann Trophy and Big Ten Midfielder of the Year.

At Yale, he has guided the Bulldogs to success both academically and on the pitch. Each of the last three years, they received Team Academic Awards from United Soccer Coaches; furthermore, every semester since his arrival has seen the team maintain a 3.5 or better team GPA. Furthermore, he has coached several students to CoSIDA or United Soccer Coaches Academic All-Ivy honoree status.

Personal Life

John Stannard was an exemplary person in his personal life. He enjoyed spending time with his family and had a deep-seated passion for learning.

He is a well-known member of Northern Irish law, having written and taught on numerous subjects. As a lecturer at Queen’s University Belfast, he earned himself an OBE in the New Year Honours list for his services to legal education.
