John Shears is a polar geographer and environmental scientist. He has worked in both Antarctica and the Arctic for over 25 years.
He is the Expedition Leader for the Endurance22 project, which will journey into the Weddell Sea off Antarctica in February 2022 in search of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s lost ice ship, Endurance. This story is one that has captivated the world for decades.
Early Life and Education
In addition to teaching at Escambia County High School, John Shears is also a coach. He is serving as the head varsity basketball coach, as well as offensive coordinator and running-backs coach for the Blue Devils football team.
Shears attended South Alabama College and received a bachelor’s degree in physical education. He then completed a master’s degree in physical education at Alabama State University.
He has worked at several schools in the area, including Theodore High School and Williamson High School. He has also served four years in the United States Marine Corps.
Shears was born and raised in Utica, Mississippi. He earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mass communications at Alcorn State University. He has also worked in public relations. He has held a number of positions, including executive director of Title III at Hinds Community College.
