John Mowen has made a major impact in the area of consumer and managerial decision-making. He has published numerous research articles and authored several books, such as Judgment Calls: High Stakes Decisions in a Risky World (1993) and Consumer Behavior (1998).
He is a regents professor of marketing at Oklahoma State University’s Spears School of Business and will retire on June 3 after 33 years of service.
Early Life and Education
John Mowen was raised in a loving family. His mother, Mary Jane Lancaster Spalding, instilled in him an intense interest in learning and devotion to intellectual pursuits.
As an adult, John pursued a career in education. He taught for many years at various classrooms and colleges throughout his career.
No matter the difficulties he encountered, his dedication to education persisted. He has collaborated with numerous organizations such as the National Council for Teacher Quality and American Association of Adult Educators.
John Spalding’s educational philosophy is founded on the idea that a comprehensive education is critical for success in life. He emphasizes the significance of students engaging with both present-day issues as well as learning about the past.
Professional Career
John Mowen has been teaching marketing at Oklahoma State University’s Spears School of Business for 33 years, earning him both the Regents Professor and Noble Foundation Chair in this area.
He has authored over 100 research articles, textbooks and trade books throughout his career, all focused on consumer behavior and high-stakes decision-making.
In addition to his academic accomplishments, he has also been an active member of the Stillwater community, serving on various boards and as a member of Leadership Oklahoma. As proud dad to Diane Sheree Schafferman (David) and Andrea Jo Branham, he enjoys spending time outdoors enjoying activities such as duck pin bowling, hunting, and traveling – plus he was seven-time All-American on SEMO track & field!
Achievements and Honors
John Mowen was an accomplished sailor as well as a loving husband and dad. During his military service, he voyaged the Pacific coast from San Francisco to Japan and back, with one particularly memorable assignment being as the helmsman aboard the USS Alaska during World War II. With that experience under his belt, John went on to have an illustrious career in energy sector while finding time for regular golf games too. Additionally, John belonged to Broadfording Church of Brethren Fellowship where he sang in their choir and taught Sunday School youth for many years; additionally lovingly with his wife of 57 years plus 7 grandchildren plus 10 great-grandchildren!
Personal Life
John Mowen leads an active career, yet his personal life is equally fulfilling. As professor of marketing at Oklahoma State University, he has taught more than 10,000 students over the years.
He is an expert on motivation and personality, having created the 3M Model theory. This model has proven helpful to him with many research studies in this area as well as being an invaluable resource to others working on similar projects.
He enjoys reading and writing in his free time, as well as traveling with his wife Marion to visit friends and family.
