Professional Career

John Magnetta has had a distinguished professional career. He founded Jerry’s Jewelers in Irondequoit and serves as its owner/operator.

He began his career in Naples, Italy, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather as a watch repairman. Subsequently, he relocated to Rochester, New York.

Magnotta also served in the Rochester Police Department and worked as a detective for a short time.

He was eventually arrested and extradited to Canada where, in 2012, Magnotta stabbed and dismembered Jun Lin – a Chinese international student – before sending her body parts around the world. In 2014, Magnotta was convicted of murder and sentenced to prison where he is currently serving a life sentence. It’s difficult to say exactly how much work Magnetta did for Tarentum since the Pennsylvania Borough Code does not stipulate what a mayor must or mustn’t do. But in the end, Kish said Magnetta achieved much for Tarentum by acting as its conscience and providing support to many residents. Furthermore, he advocated for Tarentum’s economic development – it was Magnetta who first proposed making Tarentum more competitive with other boroughs.
