John Mabane was a British businessman and politician who served as MP for Huddersfield. He had an influential role in British politics, serving as President of the Liberal party from 2001-2003.
He switched parties in 1931, though this move failed to have the desired impact on his electoral prospects. Nonetheless, he succeeded in blurring the lines between Liberals and Nationals while maintaining some unity within them.
Early Life and Education
John Mabane, born in Bertie County to enslaved parents, was an educator, legislator, editor, and businessman. He served in the North Carolina state senate twice and edited the black-owned newspaper, Carolina Enterprise.
He was the first African-American to be elected to the North Carolina legislature and the only senator of color in the United States. He was also a prominent spokesman for African-Americans in political and social arenas.
During the early part of his career, Mebane advocated for black education and the integration of African-Americans into white society. He published several articles on these subjects, including a pamphlet entitled “The Negro Vindicated,” which used data from the 1890 federal census to counter the claims made by whites that blacks were more likely to commit crimes than whites.
