Early Life and Education
At the age of 16, Koci had always wanted to become a doctor, yet her ambitions weren’t quite realized yet. Despite her early successes in school, she wasn’t sure how to make this dream a reality.
She didn’t know anyone who had graduated from medical school, so she reached out to a guidance counselor at her college to inquire how she could apply. It turned out that in order to be considered for admission into the program, she must take an extensive daylong standardized test.
In 2014, she earned a place at the esteemed Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and began her medical studies immediately. Determined to succeed as a doctor, she worked tirelessly towards this goal – and it’s this drive which enabled her to achieve success.
Professional Career
John Koci was an astute, driven professional who always put in effort. He held several high-level executive positions and has been a Certified Public Accountant since 1986.
He currently serves as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. His responsibilities include finance, accounting, taxation, treasury management and investor relations.
He joined Cleveland-Cliffs in February 2019 from Metals USA, where he served as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. In this capacity, his responsibilities included mergers and acquisitions, capital investments, forecasting, budgeting, as well as leading the development of Cliffs’ domestic scrap recycling unit.

She applied to several esteemed schools and achieved great success on her applications, even being accepted to MUSC! Although initially overwhelmed with the process, she soon found comfort in knowing that there would be no rejection letters sent her way.
Personal Life
John relished spending time with his family and friends when not engaged in work or family responsibilities. He especially cherished spending quality time with his wife, daughters and granddaughter. Additionally, John enjoyed sharing laughs with friends as well as his many animal companions.
His deep love and commitment to his family was evident, which is why he will be deeply missed by his wife Darlene Koci; daughter Penny Holeczy (Jamie); sons Tyler and Jeremy; seven grandchildren Cora, Oz, Maya, Leah, Isaiah, Ava and Julian; sister Angeline Frantz of Virginia; as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was an active member of his community and held leadership positions with numerous organizations. Additionally, he attended church regularly. Finally, he showed strong support for Best Friends Animal Society and the No Kill LA initiative.
