John Borja – A Filipino Singer Who Wants to Be the New Stone Temple Pilots Frontman

John Borja, 27, is widely reported as the top candidate to replace legendary American rock band Stone Temple Pilots with a new frontman. Last February, guitarist Dean DeLeo, bassist Robert DeLeo and drummer Eric Kretz announced they were searching for an international vocalist and opened auditions around the world.

Early Life and Education

Borja was born in San Juan, La Union on August 28, 1918 and was the second of Bernabe and Mercedes’ eight children.

He earned his civil engineering degree in Manila and then served in the Philippine Army before enlisting in the American Army Reserve. Attained the rank of Major, he enjoyed a distinguished career serving his country’s forces.

He then attended Marquette University and Marquette Dental School, graduating in 1986. Following graduation, he entered private practice and was an active member of both the Wisconsin Dental Association and Columbia-Dodge-Marquette Dental Society.

Wichita Wings attempted to acquire him and Mike Fox when they folded during the 1984-85 season, but were unsuccessful. He went on to play for both the United States national team and New York Cosmos of NASL competition.

Professional Career

John Borja is a professional soccer player renowned for his infectious smile and crafty, cunning moves. His success earned him prominent roles with the Wichita Wings, Los Angeles Lazers and Las Vegas Americans of the Major Indoor Soccer League.

He earned 11 caps for the USMNT and helped their national team place second at the 1992 FIFA Futsal World Championship.

He managed to fit in an impressive amount of volunteer activities and community service even with his hectic schedule. In the past, he served on the boards of several nonprofit organizations such as Greensboro Tidal Pool and Southern Baptist Hospital. He enjoys writing and performing songs in his free time. Additionally, he owns two restaurants – Dong Juan and Tongara Ramen – that offer authentic Filipino fare at reasonable prices.
