Jack Nusbaum – Life Insurance Underwriter
Jack Nusbaum was an integral member of Cowen & Company for over fifty years; as an expert on mergers, corporate governance and fiduciary duties. Unfortunately, he passed away unexpectedly this past Sunday evening.
TURN’s telecom staff contributed significant time and resources towards this proceeding, with Mr. Nusbaum serving as lead attorney while Christine Mailloux and Regina Costa provided additional support.
Early Life and Education
Jack Nussbaum was born in Glasgow, Scotland and immigrated to America in the early 1890’s. Working at a button factory allowed him to save enough money so his mother and father could also come over from Scotland. By early 1920’s he entered life insurance business at Massachusetts Mutual in Milwaukee.
Nussbaum earned widespread renown and respect as one of the country’s premier life insurance organizational leaders and career agents during his long career. He participated in local and state life underwriter associations, serving as president in each one before moving onto NALU where he held numerous leadership roles such as committee chair, trustee secretary secretary vice president.
Instead of flowers, JackaEUR(tm)s family requests donations be made in his memory to Amanda United Methodist Church’s Hymnal Fund in her name.
Professional Career
Jack Nusbaum earned numerous honors and awards throughout his life. He is widely considered one of the most influential and accomplished individuals in the insurance industry, serving as President in several local and state life underwriting associations.
He began his career at Willkie Farr & Gallagher as an accounting clerk in 1962, quickly progressing through to associate in 1965 and eventually partner in 1971. From 1987-2009 he served as chairman.
He specialized in corporate internal investigations and often advised boards of public companies on issues related to fiduciary duty and governance, mergers and acquisitions as well as fiduciary responsibility and governance issues. On January 11th 2021 at age 80 he passed away, leaving three sons as his legacy.
Achievement and Honors
Jack Nusbaum was an active supporter of the arts and was an enthusiastic member of the United Methodist Church, graduating from Canal Winchester High School and serving in Korea as a Navy Seabee. Additionally, he belonged to Amanda United Methodist Church as well as being affiliated with Boy Scouts of America.
In 2014, Darren Aronofsky received two honors – from Mount St. Mary’s University’s Student Government Association award for distinguished community and church service; as well as being honored with U.S. Army ROTC Medal of Excellence by their club for outstanding academic achievement. Other Gala honorees included Jeremy Irons and Nora Ann Wallace who each embodied adventurous spirits while supporting excellence in performing arts cinema and culture.
Personal Life
Nussbaum was an active member of both local and state life insurance selling associations, serving on the NALU Board as committee chair, trustee and secretary in addition to working in numerous capacities at national level within this organization.
Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP was his place of business from 1987 until 2009. During this period he focused on mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance issues and fiduciary duty issues relevant to change-in-control transactions.
Amy Nusbaum of Greeley and his three sons Bill Nusbaum of Greeley, Bob Nusbaum of Eaton and Brian Nusbaum of Pine Bluffs all cherish fond memories of him as do 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren who will miss him dearly. Funeral services were held at Adamson Chapel at 2000 47th Avenue in Greeley.
