George Kazanas has been an educator for 27 years and is now the superintendent of Midway Independent School District. Additionally, he was nominated by Region 12 for Texas Superintendent of the Year in 2014.

Kazanas has earned the respect of campus principals and teachers by his effective and reliable instructional leadership. Additionally, he has spearheaded numerous innovative educational programs that have seen great success in improving student outcomes.

Early Life and Education

George Kazanas was born in Chios, Greece and moved to Waco at the age of nine months. Ultimately, he graduated from Waco High School.

He is a servant leader who strives to foster collaboration, shared values and an uplifting sense of community. As leader of Prosper Waco group, he brings business leaders, schools and other organizations together to tackle major societal problems like education, health and economic growth.

He currently sits on the long-range planning steering committee for the State Board of Education and mentors future administrators through Baylor University’s educational leadership doctoral program. Furthermore, he collaborates closely with Midway ISD team members to enhance educational outcomes for students throughout the district. His commitment to public education has made him a respected figure within its industry.

Professional Career

George Kazanas rose to the top of the ladder at Midway ISD, serving as superintendent from 2012-2018. He had the daunting responsibility of turning the district into an innovative learning institution while keeping costs in check. Drawing upon his extensive experience as a high school principal and impressive credentials, George led by example.

He made headlines in education by being named to the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) leadership team. As director of Field Services, Kazanas will help TASB fulfill their mission to support Texas school boards as they strive to educate America’s children. As no stranger to TASB, Kazanas has held several roles within the organization including president and executive director of Wichita Falls ISD.
