Early Life and Education

Professional Career
George Briscoe made history when he became the first African American quarterback in modern American Football League history. He was selected by the Denver Broncos in 1968 and made history again by becoming their starting quarterback.
As the starting quarterback for the Denver Broncos in 2017, he set a rookie record with 14 touchdown passes. Additionally, he set franchise records for passing yards in one game (335) and total touchdowns scored in one game (4).
Briscoe went on to play for the Miami Dolphins from 1972-73, the San Diego Chargers and Detroit Lions in 1975, followed by one last season with the New England Patriots in 1976. At the conclusion of his professional career, he had 224 catches for 3,537 yards and 30 touchdowns.

George Briscoe ’88 has received numerous honors and awards throughout his football playing career. Additionally, he served on the boards of directors for numerous organizations like Boy Scouts of America, National Waterways Alliance and World Bank.
His lifelong dedication to academic excellence has been recognized with more than 60 honors for his work as both a teacher and scholar.
Briscoe’s success as a college basketball player led him to two years as the point guard for Stockton University in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). As a senior, he scored 787 points and helped lead them to their first two NJAC titles and NCAA Final Four appearances in 1987-88.
