Demetrius was a Christian leader that earned the praise of the apostle John. He lived up to what he preached and practiced.

He sets an excellent example to follow, unlike Diotrephes who was a false teacher.

Early Life and Education

Demetrius John Vellis was born in San Francisco, California to John D. and Rose Earl (Whelan) Vellis. He attended Lowell High School, Cochran-Bryan Preparatory School, and the US Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland; graduating as Ensign on June 3, 1940 and promoted to Captain on July 1, 1959.

In the first century, oral testimony was an effective means of verifying a person’s godliness. John wrote about Demetrius, a silversmith who had received praise from Christians; this man of integrity and witness to God’s truth had become, according to Scripture, one of God’s chosen witnesses.

Professional Career

Demetrius John has been a professional mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter since 2007. He is an incredibly talented, highly skilled and recognizable MMA fighter who has competed for multiple organizations.

He is renowned for his dominating performances in mixed martial arts (MMA), and is considered one of the greatest pound-for-pound mixed martial artists ever.

Johnson has achieved great success in his mixed martial arts career, defeating some of the top names in the sport such as former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Moraes and Thai legend Rodtang Jitmuangnon. Additionally, he won the ONE Flyweight World Championship and is widely considered one of the greatest pound-for-pound fighters today.

Achievements and Honors

Demetrius was a man who lived up to the teachings and practices of God’s word, serving as an example for others.

His leadership skills were put to good use, and he strived to make a positive impact in his community. He founded both Eagle Academy for Young Men of Staten Island and YouthBUILD, an initiative which assists teens earn their high school equivalency diploma and prepare for careers in trades.

He received the Purple Heart Medal for wounds sustained during World War II and is an active member of both the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, serving as Senior Advisor for Staten Island Black Heritage Day event.

Personal Life

Gaius and Demetrius were close friends of John’s, having great respect and admiration for his character and devotion to God.

Diotrephes, however, acted in ways which were contrary to what Jesus expected from him as a member of the church (verse 11). John asked Gaius to choose between his actions and those of Diotrephes.

He could either be a false teacher and danger to the church (Diotrephes), or one of those with faith in Jesus who were rewarded with good works. This warning wasn’t meant as a harsh or critical word but rather an encouragement for self-preservation.
