David Monachino has been named as the new head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, taking over for Greg Manusky who was let go earlier this week. Early Life and Education

David Monachino is one of the best-known names in high school basketball. Former head coach of Hannibal (Mo.) High School and working at Missouri State (1999), James Madison (1998) and Texas Christian (1996-97), Monachino has become one of the most successful coaches ever seen on high school courts; many sports writers and fans consider him the “best high school basketball coach in America”.

He also published The Art of Coaching Basketball: An Insider’s Guide to the Game in 2006. With his wife, they have three children – Sam, Michael, and Mikalee.

Professional Career

Monachino has over 32 years of NFL coaching experience under his belt, mentoring outside linebackers and defensive linemen at all levels. He has guided some of the league’s most dynamic pass rushers such as Robert Mathis of the Indianapolis Colts (Rob), Terrell Suggs of Baltimore Ravens (Terrill Suggs) and Khalil Mack of Oakland Raiders; won a Super Bowl ring coaching the Ravens’ linebackers; also served two years as defensive coordinator with Indianapolis Colts

At Arizona State, he served as defensive line coach from 2001-2005, helping create one of the top defensive players in college football: Terrell Suggs. That year Suggs set NCAA single-season records for both sacks (24.0) and tackles for loss (31.5), earning both the Bronko Nagurski Award and Morris Trophy as top lineman from Pac-10 Conference. Prior to Arizona State he worked at Boise State, James Madison and Missouri State as an assistant coach or administrator.

Achievement and Honors

As a coach, David Monachino has helped many players reach new heights of excellence. Most notably he assisted former Seton Knights Terry Beckner, Cale Garrett and DeMarkus Acy earn second-team All-SEC recognition at Missouri.

Monachino has served as an important coaching mentor to several NFL superstars, such as Terrell Suggs and Khalil Mack, as well as being lead assistant on a Baltimore Ravens team that won Super Bowl XLVII in 2010. Before joining the Carolina Panthers, Monachino spent two seasons as senior defensive assistant and outside linebackers coach with Chicago Bears; prior to that he served as head coach at Boise State and Missouri State while also serving as graduate assistant at Texas Christian University and James Madison respectively.

Monachino was an accomplished coach on both collegiate and professional levels, most recently serving as defensive coordinator with the Indianapolis Colts for two seasons. Under his direction, players such as Khalil Mack, Terrell Suggs and Elvis Dumervil became some of the greatest pass rushers ever seen in NFL history.

Asa Monachino was born November 15, 1941 in Irondequoit, New York and passed away July 24, 2015 at age 88. He leaves behind his loving wife Mary A. (Marcello) Monachino; sons Chuckie and Francine; daughter-in-law Cary Nelson; grandchildren Aria Matthews, Charlee Lovett and Fatimah Terry as well as numerous nieces and nephews to remember him fondly. Predeceased by Charles Frances Martella and Marie Martella but predeceased by both sets of parents Charles Frances Martella as well as siblings Chuckie and Francine; daughter-in-law Cary Nelson also survives. He was known for being loyal husband, father and grandfather who loved his family members dearly before passing.
