David Mayor made history in 1990 when he became the first Black mayor of New York City. Throughout his term as mayor, Mayor laid the groundwork for crime reduction and community development that have helped shape today’s Big Apple.
Early Life and Education
David Dinkins was born in Trenton, New Jersey and moved with his family to Harlem when he was seven.
Dinkins went on to attend Brooklyn Law School and in 1953 married Joyce Burrows.
As a student at law school, he founded a volunteer free legal aid program. For his efforts, the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations honored him with the Human Rights Award.
After graduating from law school, he founded his own law firm and an advocacy group for civil rights. He served on several committees such as the city’s Commission on Human Relations, while also becoming active within the Asian-American community. Living in Southwest Philadelphia since 1963 with his wife, four children, and passion for their family and community has never wavered.
Professional Career
David mayor began his professional career as a broadcast journalist. However, after some time had passed he realized his true calling was to provide more children and their families with better quality of life; thus, he pursued certification to become a certified behavior analyst.
At present, David is working towards his graduate degree at Arizona State University with hopes of becoming a certified behavior analyst and giving more children the chance for an improved future.
Since his appointment as Mayor, he has worked diligently to boost the city’s rain-day fund, balance the budget and increase reserves. Furthermore, he has brought in over 750 new jobs and 150 new businesses while conserving 1,750 acres of open space and creating six new community parks.

As a community leader, he is involved in numerous boards and committees. Additionally, he serves as a mentor to young people throughout the area.

As mayor, his priorities were to improve neighborhoods, reduce crime rates, create activities for youth and invest in infrastructure. Furthermore, he promised to maintain taxes at current levels – something which was accomplished successfully.
David is a graduate of Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY and holds a Master’s Degree in Public Policy and Administration from Rutgers-Camden. He has taught political science and public administration courses at Camden County College, Rutgers-Camden and Rowan University. Together with his wife Michelle they have five children living in Sicklerville, NJ where they enjoy spending time with family and friends.
