Dave Southorn Joins The Athletic As Chief Brains
Violinist Dave Southorn has a distinguished career as a chamber musician, concertmaster and soloist. Currently he performs with the award-winning Amphion String Quartet as part of Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s CMS II program and has collaborated with renowned musicians such as Carter Brey, Ani Kavafian and David Shifrin.
Early Life and Education
Boise State graduate Brian Jones, who joined The Athletic in 2013, is one of the most innovative members of his newsroom. A former sports writer for both The Press and Idaho Statesman, he’s now leading one of The Athletic’s most beloved departments. Southorn is an expert at many things, managing all aspects of their content and design projects. At present, his duties include designing and implementing an innovative, highly interactive user interface and content platform for one of America’s fastest-growing news brands. His accomplishment has already earned him the award for Best Headline Writer on the Broncos. Professional Career
Violinist Dave Southorn has had an illustrious career as a chamber musician, concertmaster and soloist. Currently he performs with the award-winning Amphion String Quartet as well as Anne-Marie McDermott, Carter Brey, David Shifrin and Edgar Meyer.
He has collaborated with the Tokyo String Quartet, Ani and Ida Kavafian of the Tokyo String Quartet and Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s CMS II program. Additionally, he has performed at Alice Tully Hall, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center’s Chamber Music Northwest program and La Jolla Summerfest.
He has performed with the Delaware Symphony and New Jersey Symphony, as well as serving as guest concertmaster with Incheon Philharmonic in South Korea. Most recently, he joined New Haven Symphony Orchestra as concertmaster in 2018. Upcoming NHSO concerts will include Mozart’s “Symphony No. 44” and “Mozart No. 38”, along with two works by lesser-known composers, we hear.
Achievements and Honors
Dave Southorn has had an immense effect on the world of music. He has received numerous awards and honors, such as the Lincoln Medal. A violinist by profession, Southorn regularly performs as both a soloist and guest concertmaster with the New York Philharmonic.
He is also a member of LE TRAIN BLEU, the Amphion Quartet and the New York Classical Players. With an insatiable passion for classical music, he strives to bring its beauty into everyone’s life by sharing its knowledge with everyone.
Charles County Public Schools recently recognized five students for their outstanding accomplishments in academics, personal responsibility and career readiness. Honorees included Leilani Bynaker from Indian Head Elementary School; Kie Myers of Billingsley Elementary School; Zamira Rodriguez of Mt. Hope/Nanjemoy Elementary School and Alexandra “Alex” Powell from Theodore G. Davis Middle School.
Personal Life
Dave Southorn, longtime Idaho Statesman Boise State beat reporter, has recently joined The Athletic – a premium sports news site headquartered in New York City. As one of ten new college football writers to join their ranks, he brings with him years of expertise and insight.
