Who is Daniel Sherrod?

Early Life and Education

Sherrod earned his master of sacred theology degree from Union Theological Seminary. While working for Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in southwest Georgia as their field secretary – participating in several civil rights campaigns including Selma voting rights march. Additionally he co-founded Albany Movement and New Communities Farm Cooperative Farm which emulates Israeli kibbutzims.

Sherrod was an active member of both the NAACP and Baptist Church. Additionally, he served on the board of directors for Albany NAACP chapter as an ordained minister.

Shirley Sherrod and James Sherrod were married, with James raising two children while also acting as both farmer and businessman; owning Cooper Machine Company of Swainsboro, GA where he provided fabrication and general knowledge equipment maintenance; in his free time he enjoyed gardening and training horses as hobbies.

Achievement and Honors

Sherrod has served on the coaching staffs of multiple FCS programs, such as Duke University (11 seasons as tutor for linebackers and running backs). Additionally, he served one season as defensive coordinator at Elon University under K. C. Keeler as well as two at Sam Houston State University as co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.

Sam recorded an impressive 22-9 record under Sherrod and advanced to the semifinals of both FCS playoffs tournaments, capturing both Southland Conference championships. Under his guidance, three Kats players earned All-America recognition while his defense helped put Sam in the top four national rankings both years.

Sherrod enjoys community development and operates his own small construction and contracting firm outside the office. Additionally, his passion lies with auto racing; he is actively involved with both Texas Region and SCCA as an active member and volunteer.
