How to Identify Minerals by Cleavage

Cleavage can be described as a natural process that causes deformation. It occurs when layers of a rock are forced apart by stresses similar to those that produce folds. It typically occurs near or parallel to the axial surface of a fold, and can be perpendicular to other folds. Cleavage orientation may also vary across a fold, or even between adjacent beds. This makes the formation of cleavages in complex rocks particularly interesting.

Scientists can identify a mineral by the shape and angle of its cleavage. Minerals such as feldspar may have two distinct directions, while others might have four. The angles at which cleavage planes cross are also used to determine the cleavage angle. Cleavage angles can be 60, 90, or 120 degrees. Sometimes, however, it is impossible to observe cleavage surfaces within fine-crystalline samples.

There are several ways to determine when a mineral was formed. One way is to look for its shape on the surface. If a mineral has a snowball-like texture, it is formed at a later time than the original stone. Some cleavages are preserved while others form over a developing mineral. A visual inspection of the mineral deformed will reveal the date of its formation. It is important to understand that cleavage patterns do not necessarily follow an exact pattern.

Depending on the type of mineral, cleavage planes may be irregular. For example, quartz has a hexagonal prism-like shape, but it breaks irregularly. Amphibole is a mineral with similar hardness, but different shapes. The cleavage angles will show you which one it is. When determining cleavage angles, it is important to note that a mineral’s cleavage angle can be influenced by many different factors.

Cleavage occurs when a mineral breaks into multiple fragments, along planes of weakness. Because minerals have different bonds, cleavage surfaces are often flattened and parallel to the directions where the weakest bonds are located within the crystal. This pattern can also be used to determine the type of crystal material. A crystal with perfect cleavage has a perfectly flat plane, while a mineral with bad cleavage is broken irregularly and unevenly.
