Benjamin quickly found himself without an available Little League team in 1947 when he wanted to start playing, so he created one himself by recruiting boys from poor neighborhoods he called Los Pobres and donning yellow and black uniforms like his idol Roberto Clemente or Pittsburgh Pirates star Pete Rose.
He led Chandler National Little League team that advanced to Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Additionally, he served as head baseball coach at Greenfield High School as well as assistant football coach.
