Ben Marek – Distinguished Faculty Member

Marek bases his teaching on three philosophies: applying real-world situations to lessons, encouraging critical thinking among his students and respect for diversity in the classroom. Furthermore, Marek believes that learning works best when tailored specifically for each student based on their unique background and education experience.

Early Life and Education

Sandra Marek, an associate professor in special education at the University of Missouri has been honored as a Distinguished Faculty Member. This award honors those faculty who have made significant contributions to educational process through research, service and leadership roles.

Ben Marek experienced a Christmas miracle this Friday afternoon when he returned home from the hospital just in time for Christmas, more than eight months after he was first diagnosed with a brain tumor in February.

His family had immigrated from Hungary in 1872. As an elderly farmer in Bila Hora section, he resided all of his life until 1897 when his widowed, Inez Marek passed away. Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Inez Marek; daughter by previous husband Mrs. Wm Cooley in this city; two stepsons Emil Krejci of Rosenberg and Ben Marek both from San Antonio; two sisters Mrs Ruby Ewald of Cat Spring and Nora Ruhmann of Alvin; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren

Professional Career

Ben is an independent physical therapist in private practice and also teaches at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell. His passion lies in helping patients return to enjoying what they love through evidence-based interventions. Ben strives to integrate new materials/strategies into his courses and encourages students to think critically; he strongly believes that students learn best when their backgrounds and educational experiences are recognized and valued.

Ben has been an integral contributor to CEA’s Global Priorities Project, developing its case for basing career decisions on expected impact. Prior to working at CEA he served as research intern and has also worked at multiple start-ups. Ben now lives with his wife and twin boys in Southington Connecticut; locals have shown support through a “Ben Strong” campaign with neighbors shoveling driveways, delivering meals, and giving gifts for his family.

Achievement and Honors

Dean’s Honored Graduate recognition is bestowed on those graduating students who have demonstrated extraordinary research; contributed to the College of Natural Sciences’ commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion; founded start-up companies; earned (international) awards such as Goldwater, Truman Churchill or Rhodes Scholarships; or performed significant service to LMU and/or its College – these qualities all apply to Marek who has excelled throughout his time here at LMU.

Marek led the Lions to their most successful season ever in their inaugural year under his guidance, posting an astounding 28-4 record and garnering the highest-ranked victories ever at school – defeating Gonzaga, Saint Mary’s and BYU all then among the top 15 ranked teams at that time – as well as setting a new WCC team GPA during winter 2022.

Personal Life

She was a member of Guardian Angel Catholic Church at Wallis. As a homemaker she enjoyed sewing, arts & crafts projects, wreath-making and spending time with her grandchildren. Additionally she enjoyed animals. She leaves behind one son, two stepdaughters, one brother, three sisters and six grandchildren to remember her by.

Hatton Elementary School students wrote letters of support for Ben during his hospital stay, as did residents donating to a GoFundMe campaign for his recovery from brain tumor surgery, with donations made at Hatton Elementary. Residents lined the streets to welcome Ben back as he drove up in his car – cheering and waving him home after being absent since February when recovering from brain tumor surgery; it had been his goal to return for Christmas.

Brad Marek has spent nine years competing on lower-level golf tours. Currently he can be seen competing at Kiawah Island Golf Resort (Ocean Course), Kiawah Championship and Corica Park Golf Club where he also runs an academy.

He is estimated to have amassed a net worth between $1-5 Million. His primary source of income comes from Rock Singing.
