Fort Worth community members are turning tragedy into healing after 17-year-old Benjamin Castaneda’s death on Thanksgiving Day. Noemi Martinez has been charged with driving wrong-way on that holiday day and causing a deadly collision that claimed Castaneda’s life as well as injuring two others.
But many of Campos’ victims still await justice – Cynthia Sumida being one. She was victimized by an impostor posing as Campos’ representative who claimed they represented her interests.
Early Life and Education
Ben Castaneda Floran was an immensely popular student who played in his school’s mariachi band. On Monday evening, hundreds of friends, students, and Mariachi Espuelas de Plata members came out to North Side High School for a vigil held to remember him; his father encouraged everyone present to remember their friend as well as think about what can be done to make our world a better place.
Violinist Michael Martin began playing violin as early as sixth grade. Later he discovered mariachi music while at North Side High School in Fort Worth and eventually found himself deeply passionate about mariachi music as a senior there. Unfortunately he was killed when Noemi Martinez drove her Chevy Tahoe into oncoming traffic early Thanksgiving morning 2019. Martinez has been charged with intoxication manslaughter.
Professional Career
At Bob Jones High School, Castaneda was heavily engaged in political activism and debate; she even served as president of Young Democrats organization. Following graduation, she went to Michigan State University (MSU), majoring in architecture studies but continuing her interest in politics through debate participation.
She interned in Washington D.C. during her spring semester and worked in a freshman congresswoman’s office; it was here where she realized the necessity of connecting both passions.
On October 1, 1966, he made his professional debut by defeating Flash Javier by four-round decision. Unfortunately, not much is known of his early bouts as his early fights remain obscure. On February 1, 1968 in Manila, Philippines he fell victim to Roger Boy Pedrano by an eight-round decision and lost this contest.
Achievement and Honors
Castaneda not only was an enthusiastic student but was an active part of his university community as well. He participated in medical missions to Oaxaca, Mexico as a volunteer. Furthermore, he interned at state Senator Leticia Van de Putte’s district office before organizing a fashion show featuring children with cancer as models.
Castaneda competed as a sprint canoer during the mid-1990s, winning a bronze medal at the 1994 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championship. He later received the Anabel and Jerry McHugh Director’s Award, given annually to students who mobilize diverse campus stakeholders toward meeting community-based needs while cultivating an engaged campus culture.
Last fall, two UTSA students, Jonathan Nomamiukor and Castaneda, advanced to the final round of competition for the Rhodes Scholarship for the first time ever at one school – something never seen before before! Olguin, assistant director for national fellowships and scholarships, attributes their success to rigorous mentoring from faculty.
Personal Life
Castaneda is both a husband and father to four daughters and one son. Additionally, many fans consider him their celebrity crush for portraying Diego Hargreeves on The Umbrella Academy.
This 17-year-old was an active member of North Side High School’s mariachi band and local Mariachi Orgullo Mexicano ensemble. To honor their loss, students, teachers and parents held a vigil Monday in his memory; his father addressed the gathering to encourage everyone not to drink and drive.
Don Juan attempts to teach Castaneda that personal history is nothing to hold onto, and that it’s best to focus on becoming an improved version of oneself every day. He even encourages him to speak to plants as equals who might offer advice.

Ben Castaneda leaves behind his family and friends to mourn his untimely departure, who was known for being a loyal son, brother, cousin, classmate, band-mate, student and neighbor to all. Ben was an outstanding friend to many – particularly his younger sisters whom he kept amused with his charismatic entertainment skills. Ben is survived by both of his parents as well as grandmothers.
