Ansel Elgort was a New Yorker who was born in Manhattan. His parents are Arthur Elgort, a fashion photographer who has worked extensively for Vogue, and Grethe Barrett Holby, an opera director. The actor has Russian Jewish and English ancestry. His mother, Aase Grethe Barrett Holby was a former member the Norwegian resistance during World War II. She later spent time in a Nazi concentration camps.

Ansel Elgort attended the School of American Ballet when he was twelve. He attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School as well as Stagedoor Manor summer performing arts camp. Elgort’s parents are talented opera directors and painters. He began acting classes as a child. At age 12, he appeared in Hairspray. He has a growing following on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
