It is common to drool while you sleep. There are many ways to treat this condition. While the condition itself does not require treatment, a healthcare provider can evaluate your situation and give you personalized advice to reduce your drool. You can adjust the position of your pillow to keep your mouth closed while you sleep. A mouth tape can also be used to keep your mouth shut during sleep. Some people find that changing their sleep position can greatly reduce their drooling while sleeping.

Some dogs drool excessively if they consume caustic or acidic substances, such as household cleaners or lemons from the trash. Others may drool when they’re agitated. Other causes for excessive salivation include dental problems, GI problems, medication, and dental care. Consult a veterinarian if your dog is exhibiting excessive salivation.

Infants and toddlers are prone to pooping. However, in adults, it may be a sign of an underlying condition. To determine if excessive salivary glands are caused by an infection or malfunction in the body’s reflexes, patients should consult a doctor. This condition can lead to aspiration in the lungs. Similarly, it can lead to a breakdown of the skin on the chin and lip area.

The severity and cause of drooling due to neurologic disorders will determine the treatment. Some neurologists may refer patients to a speech-language pathologist. Certain medications can decrease salivary gland production. Botox injections can also help. Your doctor may recommend surgery to permanently cure excess saliva if these methods fail. This is not recommended for people with severe drooling problems, but it can be an alternative for many.

If you or a loved one suffers from a condition where you always saliva, treatment may include medication or surgical intervention. Clonazepam, an antipsychotic that stimulates saliva production, may be prescribed as a treatment. Surgical intervention may be necessary if the cause of excessive saliva is more serious. If you have severe symptoms, consult your doctor immediately. You may be prescribed a specific treatment or dialysis.
